Paper: Rib Cartilage Rhinoplasty for a Harmonious Asian Face
Summary:
This presentation introduced the foundational concept behind what later became known as Harmony Rhinoplasty at VIP Plastic Surgery. The principles presented at ISAPS Kyoto in 2016 continue to guide Dr. Lee’s approach to rib cartilage rhinoplasty today, particularly for patients seeking balanced facial proportions rather than isolated nasal height correction.
Dr. Myung Ju Lee MD noted that many Asian patients typically have a low nasal bridge, a sunken midface, and a protruding mouth. Traditional rhinoplasty methods may elevate the bridge and tip of the nose but often leave the midfacial depression and mouth protrusion unaddressed, leading to patient dissatisfaction even after surgery.
To overcome these limitations, Dr. Lee introduced a new technique that not only reshapes the nose but also improves midface depression and reduces mouth protrusion simultaneously. This approach received widespread acclaim from plastic surgeons from various countries.
Instead of using silicone implants, Dr. Lee utilizes autologous rib cartilage, adding grafts to the maxilla and premaxilla—the base area of the nose—while performing a structural rhinoplasty. This method aims to achieve a more balanced and harmonious relationship between the nose and the overall facial structure.
By addressing both nasal structure and midfacial support, this technique was designed to reduce the common mismatch between nasal projection and surrounding facial anatomy. For patients, this translated into a more natural postoperative appearance and higher satisfaction compared to traditional implant-based rhinoplasty.
